West Kirby

What we are all about, thank you John and Jane comments. This is John’s edit.

West Kirby is situated on the Wirral peninsula, overlooking North Wales over the Dee Estuary, and close to the Mersey and Liverpool.  Windsurfing, sailing and running are popular outdoor activities thanks to its fantastic microclimate. The Wilson Trophy is held in West Kirby every May, and there have been some fantastic windsurfing speed records achieved by committed enthusiasts. Wirral Council takes great pride in supporting outside activities in the area.

West Kirby has two grammar schools, an excellent secondary modern, and a proactive residential school. There are also a number of local primary and junior schools. As a result West Kirby educates over 2,000 students every single term. Not a bad record for such a little town!

West Kirby’s residents are eclectic and very politically-aware, holding a proud record for the highest turnout in Wirral elections. West Kirby is Conservative by local government, but not by its actions.  Niche shops and businesses thrive. Cafe culture is embraced by the locals, who have a number of incredible places to breakfast, brunch or dine. Aubergine, Lattetude, SweetPea and Surfers rank highly for places to spend an hour, to relax and refresh both the body and the spirit.

Hilbre Island is a popular destination, and a marvellous adventure if people fancy a strong afternoon walk. Stay there when tide comes in and you can see nature at its very best. Have we mentioned the spectacular sunsets? If you can’t experience them first-hand, they are available to view via www.wirralcam.org

Ashton Park, Victoria Park, Sandlea Park, Newton Park- West Kirby has some pretty impressive public spaces.  Tennis courts, bowling greens, outside theatre, plants and shrubs.  Hollow trees and swings, football teams and fields. The Wirral Way will lead you on.

West Kirby is great for shopping, too. Need carpets or curtains, deli treats, school uniforms, high fashion… it’s all available from personable and friendly local businesses. Great butchers, excellent clothes, Christmas lights, venison sausages – you want it, West Kirby will have it!

House prices have risen faster than the UK average – after all Rafa Benitez , Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and many others have made the area their home. A few minutes down the road from West Kirby is Hoylake, home to Royal Open Golf and many other global competitions.

Want more? West Kirby is a short fifteen minute drive to Liverpool, a few minutes from M56, the backbone of  Wirral, 40 minutes to the M6, a two-and-a-half hour drive to London, or you can catch a train from Lime Street. Commuter heaven.

Did we also mention that West Kirby has a fantastic beach? Also nearby is Liverpool, home of the world famous Albert Dock, the Cavern, Museums, the Tate Gallery, the Liver Buildings and more. West Kirby doesn’t suffer from light pollution. We can see the ISS, Venus, Jupiter and Mercury almost every night on a clear sky.

Birdwatchers will be delighted at the range of species that visit West Kirby. Cranes, wood pigeons, doves, wrens, starlings and more. If you’d like to know more, then visit our own bird watching site: http://www.rspbliverpool.org.uk/Hoylake.htm

West Kirby is a day-trip destination for tourists. In the background is a quiet populace that embodies the spirit of a strong, positive community.  Fantastic schools and shops, excellent local council, well-built houses, beautiful outside spaces, a library, sports centre and a passionate, active community (via wirral forums).

West Kirby has the sand, sea and sun. A beautiful microclimate, lattes, paninis. It has award-winning schools, a thoughtful local government, area forums where people can have their say. People drink in the sun as they run around the marine lake, cycle through the Wirral Way, swing in Ashton Park…. West Kirby truly is the wonder of the Wirral.

Coastguards SOS

Its very easy to live by the sea and love it.
Love the water, love the high tide. But the water can be fatal.
It’s a strong force of nature.

I dont know anyone who knows the water who isn’t in awe of it, who isn’t afraid of it.

But there’s sometimes you find yourself stranded, propeller not working, need help.

Local knowledge saves lives.

As much remote as technology MIGHT be available, local knowledge is what RNLI know saves lives

Debt Advice

With so much uncertaintity and unemployment rising- it’s worth knowing how to get help before things get so bad you can’t cope.

The information that follows has come from a variety of sources- and is guide only.

Credit Cards- If unable to keep up repayments, receiving loads of threatening letters, contact Payplan.  It means writing down all your debt, but many card companies and banks happy to receive something, even as little as £1 a month,  if paid regularly. They may freeze your debt, meaning no added interest- but it keeps the “wolves” from the door. All further letters you receive can be sent to Payplan and they will manage your debt.

Electricity, Gas, Water – These companies all make massive profits. Don’t panic. United Utilities are great. They will chat to you about a water meter and much more. Click the link to see how far they can help. Electricity and Gas- if you have arrears, having them install a prepayment meter means you now just pay for what you use with as little as £1 per week being taken to reduce existing debt.

Council Tax- Just tell them exactly what you can afford. They will set up a plan to help with arrears.

And do ask if you are entitled to any tax credits or benefits. Through your working life you have paid into this pot, time for someone suffering hardship to ask for help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

New Grant Winter Warmth

taken from Wirral Gov website

Wirral Council has made a new Cosy Homes Heating Grant available to residents with low incomes.

With ever-increasing energy bills, the Council is keen to assist households on certain welfare benefits with broken or inefficient heating systems who are not eligible for the government’s Warm Front grant.

The Cosy Homes Heating Grant can provide new central heating systems, replace faulty or broken boilers and upgrade existing heating systems to improve their energy efficiency.

The grant is available borough-wide and will improve the energy efficiency of low income households as well as reducing the number of households who are considered to be ‘fuel poor’, that is households spending more than 10% of total income on heating. It will be available until 31st March 2013 and is issued on a first come first served basis.

Cllr. George Davies, Wirral Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: “Wirral Council is committed to helping residents to stay warm this winter and the heating works carried out under this grant scheme, used together with the Cosy Homes Insulation Programme, will help to reduce their energy bills and make their homes warmer, which is particularly important during the cold winter months.”

If you think you meet the criteria and would like to apply for this grant, please contact John Paul Griffiths on 0151 691 8114 or email heatinggrants@wirral.gov.uk. For further information on the grant please go to www.wirral.gov.uk/heatinggrants.

If you are unsure whether or not you are eligible for a Warm Front Grant, please contact the Energy Saving Trust advice centre on 0800 512 012.

New Development West Kirby

Plans to relocate the Primary Care Trust surgery located in the Concourse area to Bridge Road.

This looks like a great idea to have a new and better surgery. It does make the existing building redundant/ empty. And there are no new redevelopment plans for Concourse area.

Plans are here plus details of consultation http://www.bridge-court.co.uk/news#cutting-edge
